I don't think MAX paled in comparison to LW5, just less of a
surprise. It is a very robust program, it can do alot of stuff
that LW cannot. I personalyl liked the animation power of the
modeless enviroment. You can animate just about everything in
the modeling process without building morph targets.
I would get it, but the it's not worth the
price (MAX+CharacterStudio=$5k). For a few more thousand, you
might as well get Softimage. It was really fast though, I saw
it on both a p6 with 2Glints (GOOD NEWS TO ME -I didn't know
till then you could have two moniters under NT) and pentium133
with no graphics acceleration and it was giving shaded previews
and realtime previews of particle system with collisions.
The coolest things for me were Softimage's Digital Studio for
Play's Trinity and the Trinity itself. Though this isn't out
yet and the price will be a little more that LW/Toaster users
would want to pay, its pretty damn cool and will definitly help
all us NT users by bringing more video business to the platform.
Too many cool features to list here.
It was also nice to see SI3.5 with Mental Ray out for NT. I
thought MAX with Character Studio was looking like a good deal
until I saw it. Evidently some Beta tester of their SDK made a
footprint style animation tool in just a few days. Add that to
some the best character animation tools and a superb render
engine like Mental Ray... They demoed new
shaders for Mental Ray as well, better volumetric lighting, smoke
and hair (renders without all the geometry).
Lets see, what else
I guess I already mentioned Electric Image Broadcast=$2495.
They said it had all the features of EI but was limited to vid
resolutions.
Oh yeah, Particle Storm was being demoed at Deckstation and it
looked really cool. Its going to be a must have LWers.
I went to check out RazerPro Mach? and it crashed on an Alpha and then
I went to the Intergraph booth and somebody was waiting ten
minutes for something to render in it on a P6. hmmm.
AfterEffectsNT was announced but not available.
I focussed mainly on animation for NT. Anybody got the
spill on cool hardware for NLE, video, etc that we LWers would
